Dear Bill Gates, You have already received a male portrait of my maternal grandfather, Vasily Dmitrievich, who was held captive by the Nazis during World War II. The portrait was painted by my father, Vladimir Alexandrovich Yurkin, a student of the great Russian artist Pavel Korin. Now, for balance, I am sending a female portrait of my paternal grandmother’s sister. The portrait depicts Alexandra Maximovna Sadovnikova-Edelgauz, a neurologist. She received her medical education in Russia before the 1917 Revolution. In the Soviet Union, she worked in a psychiatric hospital, treating shell-shocked soldiers from World War II. Her portrait was also painted by my father.
Sincerely, Alexander, grandson of my grandmother Alexandra, a doctor.
